An ancient stag moved along the edge of a slow moving river. His coat shone silver in the early morning light. His mind was troubled by the event that had been occurring since the beginning of the year. The wolves that shared the mountain with the stag and his fellow deer had started to behave peculiarly just before the first fawns of the year were born. A new leader had taken over the wolf pack at the beginning of the last winter, and the wolves began to hunt more which caused such a drastic decline in the deer population of the mountain that they could not rebuild their number fast enough
